Joan and I visited this location, kinda by accident. We were traveling Franklin Co, VA on August 2, 2015. We were on a road trip to see the sites mentioned in The Wettest County in the World, by Matt Bondurant. We came down Rt 116 from Roanoke, looking for Burnt Chimney and spotted the sign for the National Site.
This is a very well done site with open fields, picnic and an extremely well run visitor’s center. The staff were friendly, and the interactive exhibit very educational. The bulk of the site is a restored plantation (nothing like Gone with the Wind). They have a few animals and a few crops growing and Joan and I found the walk around the site and the Jack-O-Lantern Branch Heritage Trail to be a gentle walk. If your in the area Booker T Washington is a nice 1-2 hour stop.
The photos that I took were with a Nikon D7200 and a rented AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens.
